Gapingvoid
Gapingvoid helps organizations transform internal culture through behavioral science, systems thinking, and semiotics. As the company evolved, its brand needed to communicate the depth of its methodology while preserving the countercultural perspective that made it distinct.
I led creative direction and visual strategy across the identity, developing a Creative Foundation that aligned strategy, semiotics, typography, color, photography, and system behavior before execution, while staying closely involved in design development.
Alongside the identity work, I led a deeper investigation into the role of semiotics within the Gapingvoid ecosystem. What began as a visual discussion evolved into a broader exploration of brand systems, organizational change, and how semiotics interact with client identities. The work challenged long-held assumptions and helped define a clearer hierarchy for the identity, informing decisions across typography, photography, color, and layout.
The identity was built as a layered system rooted in the tension between Systematic Foundation and Countercultural Edge. This tension shaped the visual decisions at a behavioral level: serif typography brought sharpness and authority; layouts and sans-serif carried a more protest-like energy through compression, scale, and interruption; negative space gave form to the void. Contrast and inversion pushed moments of clarity into confrontation, and moments of balance into edge. The new system gave Gapingvoid a stronger visual foundation, more rigorous, ownable, and expansive, without losing the conviction behind its anti-default point of view.
